playing the cornet at the age of 8 and studied under Stanley
Sutton and Bob Munn. While at Hellesdon High School, Richard

age of 14, Richard joined the back row of Sprowston Band
and soon progressed to the principal cornet position.
Richard
was invited to join Matthews Norfolk Brass in 1988 and has
been principal cornet for the band since 1994. Now in his
18th year with the band, Richard is also an active member
of the Committee, holding the Treasurer position in addition
to liaising with the bands’ sponsor.
Richard is married
to Katie Wilson, also a cornet player in the band and they
have two young Children, George and Harry. During the week,
Richard is an Accountant for a local food importer and is
a keen member of the Matthews Norfolk Brass Badminton team,
desperately needed exercise to work off the post-rehearsal
beer or two!! |

Kayleigh joined the Matthews band two years ago after playing for three years on the front bench with the Wrentham Band in Suffolk.
She became a brass player at the age of 9 at school after her clarinet teacher suggested a change of direction quickly.
Her experience grew after rehearsing with bands in Germany and France, and a few competitions and many years later, Kayleigh is still stretching and adding to her capabilities as a young brass player with a hopeful future.
Kayleigh has recently added driving to her skills and the photo shows her driving instructor with the car after she attempted to park.

Richard had to be a brass player with his mother playing Flugel horn and his father playing Bass Trombone, and his tutors Bernard Wright and Stanley Sutton gave him the necessary grounding in the Fakenham band to become a Euphonium player and Lance Bombardier in the Royal Artillery band where he studied at Kneller Hall in 1985.
Richard, who has a passion to constantly rehearse chromatic scales cites his favourite brass band piece as a tie between ‘Prague’ by Judith Bingham and ‘Journey into Freedom’ by Eric Ball, also a favourite of his wife Pamela who plays the tenor horn.
Leading a busy life as a clinical team leader paramedic, Richard enjoys time out after work and banding by swimming and relaxing with his family, and assisting his local landlord in running down his stocks of real ale.

Alan, (aka The Baron) passed the half century more years ago than he cares to remember but constantly reminds people through his toothless grin that he manages to retain his youthful looks.
He became the mainstay of the Matthews Trombone section 15 Years ago moving on from the principal trombone seat of the Drayton Band which he held for twenty years during which time he became three times winner of the East Anglian Brass band association soloist of the year award.
One his most memorable playing experiences was playing in a master class session under the baton of the legendary Geoffrey Brand and being blamed for a playing error that the Bass Trombonist did not own up to.
Alan recovered from that experience and became director
of an engineering company and is a keen shot at the weekends
which is a hobby he shares between pampering his wife and
polishing his MGRV8 sports car.

Terry was a brass student at school where at the age of 11 he was taught by Jack Gibson, and in 1970 joined the Cawston band where he progressed through the ranks to solo trombone.
Joining the Matthews band in 1986 was Terry’s gateway
to brass euphoria where, among the many excellent concerts
he contributes too, recalls as the badge of honour playing
at the Royal Albert hall on two occasions with the band winning
the first section national area contest on one of those occasions.
During
the day, Terry runs a carpet fitting business where his two
sons, Chris and Lewis follow in his footsteps although they
have yet to show interest in mastering the trombone.
After
work and band, Terry is a season ticket holding supporter
of Norwich City FC, supports his partner Carolyn as chauffeur
to national dog agility shows and enjoys spectating at drag
racing where the picture shows Terry driving some friends
around the Santa Pod circuit on a recent track day event. |

Robert, (aka Chainsaw) now 49, is the youngest member of the present Matthews Trombone section and was introduced to the trombone at the age of eleven where he was tutored at school and the Great Yarmouth Salvation Army citadel band by Charles King (jnr).
Playing in the Norfolk schools orchestra in the seventies encouraged reading Bass Clef and after a period as principal trombone for the Wrentham band the opportunity to become Bass Trombone for the Drayton band in the mid eighties conducted by Cptn Clifford Pike started the passion known only to Bass Trombonists.
After a brief period as Bass Trombonist for the Skelmersdale band, the Reepham band, later to become Matthews Norfolk Brass became the new home for the chainsaw where Robert has played for the past 15 years interrupted occasionally due to overseas work commitments.
Beyond banding, Robert is an engineering draughtsman by profession and likens the note of his weapon of choice, an Edwards B flat ,F, and E flat with Thayer valves, to the roar of his V8 sports cars, one being a three and a half litre MGBGT V8 classic which he has recently restored.

Following desperate pleas and bribes from her parents, Karin at the of age 12 agreed to 'swap' the Violin for a different instrument. Much to her Parents dismay, she found a battered silver Trumpet in the attic. (The 'mute' was not found until years later).
Contrary to rumours, she's a good few years younger than the Trombone section (!) and qualified up the ranks from 4th Section to Championship at Matthews Norfolk Brass on Repiano Cornet. She still has the 'contesting bug' and contested for the last three years with Clacton on Sea Co-op Band. Best banding moments include winning contests, playing in the "Brassed Off" stage production and in concert with Percussionist Evelyn Glennie. While working for BBC TV, she enjoyed playing a 'live' duet with the late Roy Castle during a "Children in Need" programme.
Karin still hasn't fully recovered from the 'Bitburg' experience, travelling to Germany for the European Folk Festival with 'English Festival Brass', later 'Coronation Brass'. Members included some of BTM Band and she thanks them for the singing and laughter!
Subsequent trips to Cologne and the concert in Luxembourg were a' bit of a 'blur' and blames it on the Coco Nightclub and the Bitburger brewery.
Her two teenagers whom she 'loves to bits' as youngsters were dragged along 'under protest' to band and strangely have no desire to play a brass instrument. Martin 18 and Joanne 16 are both at Sixth Form. As a 'mature' student, Karin gained a Diploma in Health and Social Welfare recently. She's an Assistant Practitioner with Norfolk County Council /Social Services in the Social Work Dept, Physical Disabilities and Older People Team.

Kevin started his musical life as a Tuba player in the school brass band, becoming a percussionist later when he saw the light.
He joined the Royal Artillery Band in 1974 and studied at the Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall before joining the Royal Artillery Alanbrooke Band which led to playing all over Europe and also conducting small orchestral ensembles and leading the Band as Drum Major.
After being posted to Woolwich London in 1991, his army musical career ended as Band Sergeant Major. Kevin then moved back to Norfolk where he plays with Matthews Norfolk Brass as well as local groups and orchestras and teaches drums and percussion.

Martin is the youngest member of the percussion section in the band at 18 years old and started playing drums at the age of twelve and has received percussion lessons from fellow band member Ian Chopping since joining the City of Norwich School in the year 2000.
Gaining experience by playing with youth bands and theatre shows around Norwich, he has played extensively with the early music group Minstrels Gallery, recording with them as well as travelling all over the country, playing at venues ranging from the British Museum to Dover Castle.
As well as being a member of the Matthews band, Martin is also a member of the blues/rock band The Ida Mae Band with whom he has recorded and performed.
After passing grade eight drum kit with distinction he has started teaching drum kit to beginners and is considering to take a year out before going on to study music at university where he wishes to specialise in composition.
